Humans have an instinct not to trust, to look upon another with a lens of selfpreservation. But, at the same time, we seek understanding, connection and love. There is a beauty - a vulnerability within each of us and there is always hope that we can each find the relationship that we most desire.
This body of work investigates different ideas surrounding relationships and our connection to the environment, animals, and to each other. the first piece that I created was for a print exchange organized by Melanie Yazzie in Colorado
titled "COVET." We had to create a print that was 8"x20" folded to fit in a 8"x10" box. When Iwas asked to respond to the theme, Covet, I immediately thought of my grandchildren. I have four at this time and I remember when they were born, I saw an animal spirit in their eyes and I gave them nick names: Mason Monkey, Maddox Mad Dog, Maddie Magpie and Emsley Elephant. The names have seemed to stick and the kids do have the personalities associated with their animal. I was able to think about this and visually represent this in the print I created.
